WHAT IS THE FESTIVAL?
Eastside Queer Stories is a performing arts festival that showcases 1-Act plays from the LGBTQIA+ community in Los Angeles. It began as the next level of development from Eastside Queer Storytelling events in East Los Angeles in 2014 to connect the LGBTQIA+ community outside of the bar and club scene. As storytelling began garnering more participants to its events – and the next step was to invite storytellers to begin developing their stories and sharing it with the community, in the form of playwriting.
In 2016, Q Youth Foundation was able to develop a team of writers, actors, theater techs and artists to stage a successful production of Eastside Queer Stories Festival in Boyle Heights. ESQS Festival was a way to give emerging artists tools to grow as writers and bring their stories to life on stage.
ESQS WRITERS AND PLAYWRITING FELLOWSHIP
Q Youth Foundation in 2017 grew and developed ESQS into a 10-week play writing fellowship workshop. The writers were selected through an online application process. At no cost to the writers they were provided with facilitators, guest speakers and a location to write. ESQS has a collection of over 25 one-act performance art pieces.
Eastside Queer Stories Festival was launched as a way to give emerging artists the opportunity to create new work and give them tools to bring their stories to life. Q Youth Foundation secured a location in East Los Angeles at the Roybal Foundation Learning Center.
Our 2018 Writing Workshop Fellowship will begin on March 3, 2018 to April 21, 2018 - we have expanded to include a Director's Workshop for Writer's who have graduated from the 2016-2017 workshops.
Our Supporters
We want to continue to develop stories from the community and humanize the LGBTQIA+ experience. As we continue to grow our base - we want to expand the production to a longer show run - the costs for production for 2018/2019 will depend on the location of the performance space and the cost of production crew.
We are not able to make this show possible without donations and patrons for the arts.
